Instructions for Authors

The Editorial Board invites contributions in the broad area at the intersections of Literary, Cultural, Social, and Spatial Studies in both English and Hungarian languages.

We ask our contributors to make an original and scholarly contribution to their fields of study. We do not accept papers that are under simultaneous consideration for publication with another journal.

Please read the notes for contributors carefully before submitting a manuscript.

Manuscripts should be uploaded on our website or sent electronically to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Where this is not possible, 2 copies of the article, typed on one side of the paper, double spaced and with ample margins, should be submitted to: Topos, EASI, University of Pannonia, Egyetem u. 3., H-8200 Veszprém, Hungary. All pages should be numbered.

Authors should send the final, revised version of their articles in electronic format. We prefer to receive files in Microsoft Word in a PC format, but can translate from most common word processing programs as well as Macs. Make sure you do not save your files as “read only.”

Manuscripts written in English may use any standard variation, but contributors should bear in mind that they are addressing an international audience.

Topos uses a double-blind peer-review process. We believe in a cooperative process that helps our contributors to improve their papers by the comments of independent experts working within the same academic field.

To guarantee anonymity, authors should include a separate title page with their name, full postal address and email address.

On the top of the first page of the article the title alone should appear. Final formatting is the editors’ responsibility. In the final draft, the article title should be followed by the author's name, with a footnote denoting institutional affiliation and location.

We also ask our contributors to provide a short note with biographical information as well a list of their publications related to their article submitted. We welcome author portraits also for our author pages.

Manuscripts are ideally between 4,000 and 8,000 words in length, including references and footnotes. The Editors will consider manuscripts up to 10,000 words for an article in exceptional cases.

The manuscript should be accompanied by an abstract of 100–150 words as well as a list of key words.

Topos publishes reviews of current books of potential interest to scholars and students in the fields of literary, cultural, social, and spatial studies. Because of the cross/multi-disciplinary nature of our focus, we ask our reviewers to concentrate on the relevance of the reviewed book(s) to the study of space and spatiality in the humanities.

The length of book reviews should be within a suggested word limit of 1,500 words. Please provide a list of key words also.

Reviews should include:

  • Title of the book review
  • Publication information of the book under review: book authors(s)/editor(s), book title, city/cities, publisher, date, page count, price for hardback and/or paperback

Body of review:

  • Brief description of the book's contents
  • Discussion of the book's relevance to our focus
  • Critical reflection on the book's contents

Please also include in a separate file (on a separate sheet) your name, institutional affiliation, address/contact information, e-mail address, and a short biographical note for you. We welcome author portraits also.

We ask you to secure permission if you want to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as derivative reproduction, where you work is substantially based on a copyrighted source.

We ask our contributors to submit (type out) tables, figures, and illustrations in separate files (on separate sheets) and not included as part of the text. Please indicate the approximate position of tables and figures in the manuscript.

Manuscripts must conform to the journal’s specifications. Please consult “Topos Manuscript Format and Citation Guide.”

Before sending your paper, please make sure that you have followed format specifications.
